Franz Schubert's chamber music is an integral part of the global musical heritage. Through an anthology of works for strings and piano in this program, we explore the developmental journey of the brilliant Viennese composer in the field of chamber music.
The Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 4 in A Major was composed in 1817. It reflects Schubert's experimentation with sonata form, in which he incorporated vocal elements that resemble "songs without lyrics," filled with cheerfulness, rhythmic details, intertwined and refined with a deep sense of melancholy.
The Sonata in A Minor was composed in 1824 for the Arpeggione, a now forgotten hybrid instrument somewhere between a guitar and a cello. This masterpiece was first published for cello and piano in 1871 and has since become an exceptional virtuoso addition to the romantic repertoire for both instruments.
The brilliant Trio in B-flat major, with its symphonic scale, was composed in 1827, during Schubert's final and most mature creative phase. This work blends the perfection of classical form with the profound touch of romantic emotional expression in a truly unparalleled way.
