TOGETHER, IN THE WORLD OF NIKOS GATSOS

The first song in Maria Farantouri’s discography is Blood-stained Moon with lyrics by Nikos Gatsos and music by Mikis Theodorakis. Three other songs by the two creators from 1965 follow. Next, Maria Farantouri performs the poet’s words with music by Manos Hadjidakis in four works: The Absurd, The Nightmare of Persephone, Dark Mother and Amorgos. Manolis Mitsias began collaborating with Nikos Gatsos in 1969 with the well-known song Ena Parapono (With Complaint), with music written by Dimos Moutsis. Afterward, Gatsos would write many songs to be performed first by Manolis Mitsias, to music by Dimos Moutsis or Loukianos Kilaidonis, but mainly to music by Manos Hadjidakis on the albums Gold of the Earth, Immortality, with John the Killer being identified with the singer and Winter Sun. Including The Song of Old Times with music written by Elias Andriopoulos and the oratorio Epitaph Days with music written by Dimitris Papadimitriou, Mitsias has performed over eighty first versions of songs with lyrics by Gatsos, thereby asserting his claim to the title of principal performer.
