PART I
Cantores Sancti Pauli: Incipit Lamentacio

The vocal ensemble directed by Iason Marmaras and which specialises in Renaissance religious music presents the Lessons of Darkness by Thomas Tallis and Catholic music from the English Reformation. The phrase "Incipit lamentatio Ieremie prophete" announces the first lesson of the Liturgy of Darkness. The Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah, a profoundly expressive work on the destruction of Jerusalem, were especially popular in 16th century England. The greatest composers of the day, such as Robert Whyte, William Byrd and the inimitable Thomas Tallis, wrote mystical music for this text, which is representative of the high point of the Elizabethan Renaissance.
