PART I
Las Meninas – The music behind the painting
There is no doubt that the painting
Las Meninas (
The Ladies in Waiting) by Diego Velázquez is one of the most important works in Western art. Which music, however, did Velázquez listen to as he painted in the court of King Philip IV? Juan Hidalgo and José Marín, two composers who offered their services to Philip, as well as Gaspar Sanz, the greatest Spanish guitarist of the 17
th century, guide us in a recreation of the soundscape of the era.

PART II
Fandango – The Spain of Boccherini and Goya
Luigi Boccherini, one of the greatest cellists and composers of the second half of the 18
th century, lived for most of his life in Spain, working in the service of the Infante Don Luiz, in whose court he met Francisco Goya. Boccherini’s music, virtuosic but also soft and sensitive, warm and sensual, offers a Mediterranean answer to Viennese classicism. His string quintets with two cellos are an important and particularly original part of his output. This programme presents two of his most beautiful quintets, with a strong Spanish influence, one of which also includes the famous
Fandango.
