TSSO AT THE CONCERT HALL
SHOSTAKOVICH AND MAHLER
TSSO IN COOPERATION WITH TCH
A. Borodin: In the Steppes of Central Asia
D. Shostakovich: Concerto for cello No. 1 in E-Flat Major, Op. 107
G. Mahler: Symphony No. 1 in D Major
Shostakovich wrote the Concerto for cello No. 1 in 1959 for Mstislav Rostropovich, allowing the exceptional virtuoso and his friend great freedom of expression. In this work, particularly dynamic sections alternate with more thoughtful moments, through which Shostakovich talks about his loneliness. The TSSO is conducted by Vassilis Christopoulos and with the German cellist Maximilian Ηornung, who started his career as first principal cellist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra before becoming a soloist.
In the second part, Mahler’s grand First Symphony will be performed, a work that was written by the great composer as part of his personal catharsis from the passions of youth as well as an opportunity to say with his music everything he wished, as he always believed that ‘A symphony must be like the world, it must contain everything’, and this is exactly what he does in his first symphonic attempt.
