IONIA GROUP: ON THE TRAILS OF TRADITION

The yards of small houses with tiled roofs still smell of basil, the aroma of tsipouro is lingering in the air, sounds from the past are heard on the streets. The refugee neighbourhood of Nea Ionia has given life to new musicians and groups of advanced technique and performance in traditional music.
The Ionia Group was created twelve years ago by Nektarios Demelis, the group’s Artistic Director. It consists of two orchestras, two choirs (children’s and adults’) and a department for traditional instruments. The choirs are conducted by Kornelia Frangogianni.
