DIMITRIS PATRAS & MARILENA LIAKOPOULOU: ECLECTIC AFFINITIES

T.C.H.
An evening of chamber music for cello and piano
R. Schumann: Fünf Stücke im Volkston (5 pieces in folk style), Op.102
F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy: Sonata for cello and piano No. 2 in D major, Op. 58
J. Brahms: Sonata for cello and piano No. 2 in F major, Op. 99
This is group of young, ambitious and passionate musicians, namely, Robert and Clara Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn and, a short while later, Johannes Brahms. Their main base being the Schumann’s home, their philosophical ideas and music sheets, the reviews and dedications passed around by hand, created what later became known as ‘German Romanticism.’ The group of “David’ s fans”, as invented in the mine of imaginative Schumann, fought against musical Pharisaism of their times, against rationalised musical expression detached from feelings.
Tonight, three representative works of that historic point in time are performed; they clearly reflect the interaction between the three composers, yet each one’s personal style also comes across unadulterated.
