The Guangzhou Ballet was established in January 1994 as a Professional Artistic Ensemble Pilot Unit, organised by the Guangzhou Municipal Authority. It is headed by famous dancer Zhang Dandan, who is also the Artistic Director. Since it was founded, the Guangzhou Ballet has focused on developing a variety of styles, based on classical ballet. With regard to artistic creation and innovation, it has introduced world masterpieces of classical ballet to its repertoire and has held productions of noteworthy works by modern choreographers, both in China and abroad. At the same time, it explores space and contributes symbolically to the nationalisation of ballet.
Guangzhou Ballet has toured in more than 20 countries and regions with the purpose of cultural exchange. Its performances on the most important stages in Europe and America were a sensation both among audiences and among the media. By participating in major cultural events the Ballet acts as a platform for culture and international exchange.
