Angelos Samartzis

The Greek tenor Angelos Samartzis was born in Athens and brought up in Rhodes.
A most versatile artist, he has sung most of the major roles of the italian repertoire, especially in operas by Verdi (Radamès in Aida, Manrico in Il Trovatore, Gustavo in Un ballo in maschera, the title role in Don Carlos, Don Alvaro in La Forza del Destino, Alfredo in La traviata and Ismaele in Nabucco) and Puccini  (Chevalier Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut, Rodolfo in La bohème, Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Dick Johnson in La Fanciulla del West, Luigi in Il Tabarro, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi and Calaf in Turandot), as well as Turiddu in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana. He has sung major French opera roles such as the title roles in Gounod’s Faust, Massenet’s Werther and Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann, as well as Don José in Bizet’s Carmen and Jason in Cherubini’s Médée. His repertoire also includes roles in German operas (Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos and Narraboth in Salome by Richard Strauss, as well as Froh in Wagner’s Das Rheingold).
He has appeared in many theatres in Europe and Asia. This season he will make his American debut as Calaf in Turandot at the Lyric Opera of Kansas City.
