Ulf Englund

Ulf Englund is a prolific and versatile light designer. He began his career nearly 35 years ago at The Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm, where he created the light designs for many major productions including Robert Wilson's and Tom Waits’ "The Black Rider" directed by Rickard Gunther and Robert Lepage’s productions of Strindberg’s "A Dream Play" and Celestina.
He worked often with The Efva Lilja Dance company, ELD, and received the Light Designers Prize in 2004 from The Swedish Lighting Designers Association for his work there on "The Outmost White".
In addition to The Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm his designs have been seen in all of Sweden’s major theatres such as Stadsteater, Oscarsteatern and Göta Lejon in Stockholm as well as Stadteatern in Malmö and in Gothenburg. He has worked in many of the Stockholm avant-garde theaters companies such as Plaza, Orion and Galeasen. “ Wear it like a crown” was the beginning of his collaboration with Circus Cirkör, his latest collaboration with them was “Knitting Piece/Knitting Peace that was performed in Marseille’s year in 2013 when it was Cultural Capital of Europe.
Ulf Englund is also a musician and that makes him a natural for lighting a variety of musical productions from rock to classical. Since 1996 he has toured regularly in Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and the Middle East with opera and jazz singer Barbara Hendricks and the Magnus Lindgren quartet.
He continues to be in demand for his innovative lighting design but has also returned to playing the guitar, performing with his own band, Band of all Trades since 2003. With Barbara Hendricks he has performed many concerts worldwide; in 2009 at Human Rights Days in Stockholm, Sweden and at Unesco’s International Jazz Day, Paris, France; Fondation Pascual Maragall in Barcelona in 2012, a concert for Peace in Helsinki Finland in 2013, a Tribute to Claude Nobs, Montreux, Switzerland in 2014 and a Tribute to Daniel Pearl that same year at Sacem in Paris as well as in Montreal, Canada, a concert with the National Youth orchestra of South Africa in Cape town, a tour in Germany with the WDR choir and the Catalonia Prize ceremony in honor of Archbishop Tutu in Barcelona. He has graciously performed at many UNHCR events such as the annual Nansen Award ceremonies in Geneva, but also in Washington D.C., Dubai and London. He performed with Barbara Hendricks in Cuba in 2015 in Santiago and in May 2016 in Havana as a part of the French Government´s Month of French Culture in Cuba.
