Diana Theocharidis

Choreographer, Artistic Director of the Teatro de la Ribera (Buenos Aires, Argentina)

Diana Theocharidis was born in Buenos Aires and trained at the Teatro San Martín Dance School. She continued her studies in France and Italy, taking workshops given by Alwin Nikolais, Carolyn Carlson, Malou Airaudo, and Elsa Piperno, among others. She has been invited as a choreographer to the Cursus for composers in the IRCAM in France. She studied Philosophy and Psychology at the University of Buenos Aires.
She has developed her work in an interdisciplinary field focused on dance, musical theatre and other kinds of stage forms in relation to experimental music and movement.
She has established close collaborations with composers as Mauricio Kagel, Giacinto Scelsi, Pascal Dusapin, Martin Matalón, Pablo Ortiz and Mario Lavista, among others together with numerous soloists and instrumental ensembles: Anssi Karttunen, Ars Nova, Sillages (France), Antidogma Musica (Italia), Grupo Estudio Contemporáneo, Orquesta de Cámara Mayo, Choir of Colegio Nacional (Buenos Aires).
Her choreographic pieces were premiered in the most important theaters of Argentina, France, Italy, Finland, Venezuela, México, Chile, Brazil and Uruguay.
She has been invited to several international festivals and events: Festival di Danza Contemporanea e Nuove tendenze (Roma), Festival Buenos Aires en Porto Alegre, Festival di Musica Antica e Contemporanea (Torino/ Saluzzo), Congreso Latinoamericano de Danza (Caracas), Festival de Danza Independiente (Santiago de Chile), Buenos Aires en Porto Alegre, Festival Internacional de Teatro (Buenos Aires,), Degustarte (México), Festival Latinoamericano de danza contemporánea (México) , Festival de Poesía en Voz Alta (México), Festival de l ́Imaginaire (Paris), Festival d ́Ile de France (Paris), Festival Musica Nova (Helsinki).
As a stage director she did the staging of contemporary musical theater pieces: Variéte, (by Mauricio Kagel at Teatro Colón), Zwei Akte, Quasi Niente (by Mauricio Kagel, at Centro Cultural Kirchner), La Rosa, Trazas sobre Trazas, Formas in pulvere (by Martin Matalon, at Teatro Colón, Arsenal de Mtez, TAP Scène Nationale de Poitiers, Conservatoire National Supérieur d ́Art Dramatique, Paris, among other theatres in France), Bureau 470, (by Tomás Bordalejo at Centro de Experimentación Teatro Colón), Un cielo y el otro (by Pascal Dusapin, CETC). And also, the staging of baroque operas: Orfeo ed Euridice (Gluck), Le bourgeois gentilhomme (Lully), Castor et Pollux (Rameau) with the Compañía de las Luces, Colegio Nacional, Buenos Aires.
She has done the choreographies of the operas Mahagonny, Dido and Eneas, Bomarzo, Death in Venice, La Traviata, The Magic Flute, La Cenerentola, Eugene Oniegin, Carmen, Król Roger, Il Prigioniero, Les contes d ́Hoffmann, Don Carlos, Turandot, Trouble in Tahiti, at Teatro Colon, Teatro Argentino de La Plata, Opera Krakowska, Teatro San Carlo (Napoli). Palacio Euskalduna (Bilbao), Teatr Wielki (Poznan), Teatro Sodre (Montevideo), Olavshallen (Trondheim), Megaro Moussikis (Thessaloniki), Croatian National Theater (Zagreb), Teatr Wielki (Lodz), collaborating with stage directors such as Alfredo Arias, Jerôme Savary, Eric Vigié, Roberto Oswald, Sergio Renán and Michal Znaniecki.
She has worked with artists coming from different disciplines: dancers, circus performers, visual artists, musicians, etc;
She has created a lot of site-specific performances in different public spaces in cities in Latin America. (Mexico DF, Valdivia, Buenos Aires).
As a curator and cultural organizer in Argentina, she has been the founder director of the Dance Company of the Nacional University of Art. She directed the Experimental Center of the Teatro Colón. She has been the dance director of the National Endowment for the Arts. She has been curator of the concerts and theater seasons in Villa Ocampo.
She is currently the Artistic Director of the Teatro de la Ribera in Buenos Aires.
She is a regular professor at the National University of the Arts.
She has been condecorated by the French Government with the order of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
