Athens-born mezzo soprano Angelica Cathariou sings a wide range of operatic and symphonic repertoire –Carmen, Peri’s Euridice, Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, Rigoletto, Falstaff, Britten’s Phaedraand Beggar’sOpera, Weill’s Mahagonny Songspiel and Happy End, Matinu’s Les larmes de couteau, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Duruflé’s Requiem, Sinfonia N.1 and T.S.Eliot Songs by Jani Christou, Missa Harmoniae Verbi by G.Koumendakis – at venues including New York’s Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw, Opéra National du Rhin, Megaron Athens Concert Hall, Teatro Comunale di Ferrara, Opéra Comique, Freiburg’s Konzerthaus,Onassis Cultural Center, Culturgest Hall (Lisbon), The Pharos Arts Foundation (Cyprus), Cité de la Musique, Fondation Royaumont, дом музыки (Moscow) and the international festivals of Athens, Marseille, Budapest, Roque d’Anthéron.
Angelica has performed with renowned orchestras, such as the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, under the musical direction of: Claudio Abbado, Antonello Allemandi, Theodore Antoniou, Steuart Bedford, Byron Fidetzis, Jan Latham-Koenig, Miltos Logiadis, Myron Michailidis, Alexandre Myrat, Michel Plasson, Tiziano Severini, Alberto Zedda.
She also performs extensively as soloist in numerous concerts of contemporary music. Her appearances include Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, Le Marteau sans Maître by Boulez,Berio’s Folk Songs and Sequenza III, Miss Donnithorne’s Maggot by Sir PeterMaxwell Davies, Pärt’s Stabat Mater, Crumb’s Ancient Voices of Children, in presence of the composer, Performances of contemporary opera include the creation of the leading female roles in four new operas by Greek composers at the Greek National Opera and the world premieres of Mamangakis’s Opera of Shadows and Theodorakis’s Lysistrata.
She has recorded the world premiere of Skalkottas’s 16 melodies for BIS (“…a rich creamy voice and superb Skalkottas interpreter…”BBC Music Magazine), and the music of Alexandre Desplat for the film 11'09"01 New York September 11. Other world premiere recordings include Xenakis’s Zyia for SAPHIR (Orphée d’Or 2012 Prize for best recording of contemporary vocal music), Melisma by M.Adamis (Naxos) and Mitropoulos’s 14 Invenzioni. She has also recorded De Falla’s El Amor Brujo (Naïve), Schubert’s Messe Es-Dur, N.Mamangaki’s Opera of Shadows and the Erotokritos melodrama and vocal works by: Clotilde Rosa (La Ma de Guido), Dinos Constantinides (Centaur), Dimitris Themelis,Nicos Astrinidis and G.Kasassoglou (jmk).
