Organizer: TCH

C. Debussy: Sonata for Cello & Piano
L.v. Beethoven: Sonata for Piano & Cello in G minor, Op. 5, No. 2
C. Franck: Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Major
(in an arrangement for cello and piano by Jules Delsart)
Ludwig van Beethoven is one of the towering figures of the German musical tradition. In the first part of this concert he will be juxtaposed with one of the most important representatives of the French tradition, Claude Debussy. At the end of his turbulent career, Debussy, drawing inspiration from French composers of the Baroque era, began to compose a cycle of six sonatas for various instruments that remained unfinished. César Franck, who lived and worked for the greatest part of his life in Paris, was inspired in his musical compositions by Liszt, Wagner and also Beethoven and rigorously defended the performance of works by foreign composers, in an era when there was a fierce debate over the exclusive promotion of French music.
