EX SILENTIO ENSEMBLE: ASPECTS OF MEDIEVAL THESSALONIKI - THE MUSIC OF THE TROUBADOURS IN THE KINGDOM OF THESSALONIKI 1204
Organizer: TCH
Works by Raimbaut de Vaqueiras, Elias Cairel and others.
In the early 13th century, alongside the pillaging troops of the Fourth Crusade, two troubadours from the south of France arrived in the newly-created Kingdom of Thessalonica. Raimbaut de Vaqueiras and Elias Cairel were to spend a creative period in the city, where they produced works rich in historical and political allusions. Their songs transport us to a period in the history of Thessaloniki that is little known and which offers a rare glimpse into the musical and broader cultural reality of the time. The original study entitled The Music of the Troubadours in the Kingdom of Thessaloniki, on the composers and poets of Provence who arrived in Latin-held Byzantium, especially to the court of Boniface of Montferrat, is based on the postdoctoral research project of Dimitris Kountouras at the Research Centre for the Humanities and has been published as a book and CD with Nepheli.
