Few are the names that marked the forefront of the international artistic avant-garde of the last century as much as Xenakis, an inexhaustible multi-creator with wide influence, who left Greece and settled in Paris during the civil war. His inventiveness was never confined by the traditional barriers that separate science from art or the arts from one another: During the fifty years in which he was active, Xenakis saw music as a privileged field for the expression of universal principles and abstract structures, exploring its relationship with other fields of human knowledge and activity, such as physics and philosophy, and applying processes originating from stochastic mathematics, set theory or game theory to his compositions. At the same time, he pioneered in the evolution of electronic music and combined music with architecture in a groundbreaking way, thus creating a series of pivotal, multi-faceted works.
The dissonArt ensemble presents a program consisting of works by Xenakis for an instrumental ensemble that spans the last two decades of the great and uncompromising creator’s production.
