1922-2022
FROM ASIA MINOR TO THESSALONIKI. A CITY'S REBIRTH

Organizer: THESSALONIKI CONCERT HALL - PARALLAXI - THESSALONIKI ALLIOS
Destroyed due to the fire of 1917, Thessaloniki was the city that welcomed a huge number of refugees from Asia Minor, after 1922 and the compulsory exchange of populations. After the first temporary settlement, the rehabilitation of the refugees followed until World War II, and post-war. Thus, they were gradually integrated into the social and economic life of the city and, in fact, contributed to its rebirth and the formation of the modern metropolis.
The exhibition aims to approach this fact through 3 topic sections:

1st section:
The places of origin. The history and culture of lost homelands

2nd section:
The temporary settlement. The time of the refugees’ arrival in the destroyed city

3rd section:
The permanent settlement. The city’s rebirth
