The works in the program are among the most popular and at the same time the most demanding compositions for violin and piano by L. v. Beethoven and J. Brahms.
Beethoven's Sonata No.3, the third in his collection Op.12 , was written in 1798 and is dedicated to Antonio Salieri. Its first and third part are characterized by a youthful carefree drive, while it focuses expressively on the second part, Allegro con molta espressione, heralding the later development of the composer.
Beethoven 's Sonata no.7, the second in the collection Op.30 was written in the period 1801-1802 and it is dedicated to Tsar Alexander I of Russia. It is a Sonata full of passion and dynamism which is expressed in the initial Allegro con brio with heroic drama and with remarkable persistence in the Finale.
The 3rd and last Brahms Sonata for violin and piano written in 1888 and dedicated to Hans von Bülow, contains Hungarian folk elements, melancholic tone, but at the same time extreme tensions. The concerto rivalry between the violinist and the pianist characterizes this monumental work of late Romanticism.
