DANCERS OF NORTH: ROMEO AND JULIET
Organizer: TCH - DANCERS OF NORTH
Shakespeare’s matchless play Romeo and Juliet in a new production by the Dancers of North. Through music and the movement of the human body alone, the well-known contemporary dance group transports this archetypal drama to the modern era, commenting upon the problems of our world today.
The action takes place in the conference room of a multinational tech company, staffed by ambitious technocrats, relentless rationalists who dictate the movements of the global markets and determine what we eat, what we drink, how we breath, how we dress and how we are entertained. Allegiance/obedience to the company’s values is the highest value. The main impetus in this world is not forbidden love, but “sick” competition, the unfair fight for dominance, the ambition that crushes. Hate kills everything, especially love.
And what if someone suddenly feels something? If he feels, in a world no one is allowed to feel? Then disaster awaits him. The eternal battle of Right Reason and Emotion sets the terms of the show. When feeling does not pulsate, it will come back at some point, at an unexpected moment, to avenge. The denial of emotion is hubris. This is what happens to Romeo and Juliet. They are the children of reason who are destroyed by not being able to manage their raw, primeval emotions.
