PART II
L. v. Beethoven: Symphony No. 8 in F major, Op. 93
This summer semester concert by the Symphony Orchestra of the Department of Music Science and Art of the University of Macedonia is centred on two symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of his birth. The wonderful Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21 has beautiful themes and is based on the techniques and influences of the earlier great teachers of symphonic music, Haydn and Mozart. Symphony No. 8 in F major, Op. 93 diverges somewhat from the classical form, particularly in the fourth movement, and has a light-hearted almost humorous mood, although without losing its great subtlety and beauty.
The concert opens with the composition On Violence for Orchestra by Anastasia Giamouzi, a student specializing in Composition, who drew her central idea from Hannah Arendt’s book On Violence and specifically from the following quotation: “The practice of violence, like all action, changes the world, but the most probable change is a more violent world.”
